30 Drills and Golf-Fitness Exercises to Do Before the End of Summer

16Reverse Pivot Drill

The reverse pivot (when the golfer’s back leg straightens and the upper body tilts towards the target) is one of the hardest faults to change in a golf swing.  If you reverse pivot, you may lack power, but don’t despair, there are things you can do to get rid of it.

Reverse Pivot

Sometimes the fault is just lack of understanding of correct swing mechanics, but most of the time it is because the golfer lacks mobility between the upper and lower body.

Here are two things you can do off course to help you shed the reverse pivot.

Ideally, you want to separate your upper body from lower body to rotate your shoulders around your spine so not to tilt toward target

Off-Course Exercises

Learn how to turn your upper body away from target. To get the feeling of your upper body turning away from target, not towards it, put your front foot on an elevated surface (as to simulate an uphill lie on the golf course) so that your upper body tilts away from the target.  Take practice swings and feel how your back knee stays flexed and your torso rotates away from target.

Step on an elevated surface to simulate an uphill lie

A reverse pivot can be caused by limited trunk to pelvis separation, reduced spinal mobility and limited flexibility in the lats.  Here is an exercise to learn how to separate your upper body from lower body and stretch out those lats (the muscles that run down your back from under your arms).

1. Sit with good posture on an exercise ball.

2. Place a golf club behind your shoulders.

3. Gently turn your upper body over the resistance of your lower body.  Try not to tilt your hips. You can move your head as you turn to help increase range of motion.

4. Hold the stretch for a moment and release and repeat several times.

15. Thumbs Up Drill

14. Side Plank Drill
