A Note from Karen

Golf takes a lot of time, so why not get some exercise and practice your golf game at the same time? Try my tips to help improve your fitness and golf game.

Popular belief says that the more you practice and play the better your swing and game should get.  Right?  Well, not always.  As the months go by, your muscles may be getting tighter and shorter due to injury, from trauma, or from repetitive
strains and over-use that cause micro-tears.

Scar tissue may form around muscles and joints causing those parts to be less elastic. The constant repetition of the golf swing may cause you to gradually lose the stretch component of your muscles, making you more prone to injury and causing your swing to make compensations because you cannot take your muscles and joints through their full range of motion.  Short and tight muscles, especially in the shoulder and upper back area, will restrict how far you can swing the club back and turn, reduce power and restrict your follow-through.

When shoulder rotation is restricted the body compensates with excessive spinal rotation and the golfer may notice that they have difficulties in: keeping their eyes on the ball and sequencing their weight shift correctly.  Usually a tight upper body will cause you to overuse your hands and arms resulting in fat and thin shots.

Take time to stretch your shoulders and upper back before and after your round to restore your full range of motion in your muscles and joints.

            Golf Towel Stretch

Towel Stretch

Golf Towel Stretch

1. Hold a golf towel in one hand and drape it over your shoulder and down your back as shown.

2. Reach behind your back with your other hand and grip the towel from underneath as shown.

3. Gently pull the towel down with your bottom hand to feel a gentle stretch in your shoulder and upper back.

4. Hold the position for 15-20 seconds working up to holding the stretch for 30 seconds. Slowly release the stretch. Repeat on the opposite side.
