Want to start a golf-fitness program?  Don’t know where to start?  Start by improving your flexibility.  Do exercises that target chronically tight muscles in golfers.

How do you develop flexibility and mobility to improve your golf swing?

The first and foremost component of a golf fitness program is to stretch and balance muscles before you work on developing stability, strength and speed.

Start by incorporating a warm-up routine before your daily workout, practice or round of golf. You want to target muscles, used in the golf swing, that are chronically tight in golfers. For example: neck, shoulders, upper back, hips and low muscles are typically tight in golfers.

The Side Neck Flexion exercise will improve range of motion in your neck and shoulder area.

  1. Stand or sit on an exercise ball or chair with straight posture.
  2. Slowly side bend your neck to the right bringing your ear toward your shoulder as far as you can, hold position for a moment and return to the start position.
  3. Repeat motion on opposite side.
  4. Alternate bending your neck side to side for 8 to 10 repetitions on both sides.

Be careful not to allow your shoulders to raise up as you turn your neck.
