Don’t Limit the Power in Your Swing

Is Your Lack of Torso Rotation Limiting the Power in Your Golf Swing?

One of the most common swing faults among higher handicappers and even some low handicappers is lack of rotation in the torso during golf swing.  Many golfers end up just lifting or just swinging their arms. Compared to professional golfers that have massive torso and shoulder turns. If you lack rotation, you may end up with lack of power, pulls and slices.

Correct-Full Shoulder and Torso Turn

To create your maximum turn you first, need to be flexible and strong enough to get your body in the correct position. If you are flexible and are not creating power, then it may be just be matter of learning the correct swing mechanics. But if your body is physically incapable of getting into the correct position, no amount of ball hitting will help you, in fact, you will just keep ingraining the incorrect move.

Doing a few exercises and drills to free up your torso and shoulders should help you improve that rotation.

On-Course Tip

Most great ball strikers, and I say most, because there are always exception to the rule, sweep the club back use core muscles including the shoulders, upper back, abs, and oblique muscles, keeping the hands passive.  As opposed to just lifting the club up with only the hands and arms.

This sweep movement is called the “classic one piece takeaway”. The arms stay connected to the body.

Here is an easy drill or swing thought to help you feel what I mean.

Logo Drill

You will need to wear a logoed shirt. Set up as if you were going to hit a shot. Start your swing back keeping the clubhead low, trying not to cover the logo on your shirt with your lead arm or left arm, if you are right handed like me. The clubhead should be just outside your back foot with the triangle that your arms and hands formed at address still intact (see photo).

From this position you would hinge your wrists and complete the backswing with a nice turn in your shoulders and torso.

If you do this incorrectly, using only your arms, you’ll lift the club up and you’ll end up covering up the logo (see photo).  You are essentially just lifting your arms, not rotating. So practice this takeaway by swinging the club back without covering the logo on your shirt.

Set up in front of a mirror with a logoed shirt.
