Essentials for Your Game-Making a Swing Change

KarenEssentials for Your Game, Golf Fitness

Why is it that when you take a golf lesson you get worse?

Oftentimes, when people take golf lessons, they may walk away from the lesson hitting the ball worse.  If this has happened to you, the reason may be simple: your brain is telling your body to swing a different way than you have before and it may not feel comfortable.  It is not automatic like your old swing, so you will feel  uncoordinated and uneasy.

If this has happened to you, do not stress.  You simply need to make sure you have a good understanding of the movement you want to do and give yourself some time to ease into the new moves.

Whenever you take lessons and try to make a swing change, it is important to remember a few points that will help you with the transition.

  1. Practice the swing change, but try not to overdo the new move or motions that your teacher suggests.  What happens to a lot of people after a golf lesson, is that they exaggerate the new move, and that may throw off tempo and timing.  You may actually hit the ball worse after a golf lesson.
  2. Be patient and rehearse the move without hitting a ball for several sessions until you are comfortable with the new move.  Rehearsing the new move without hitting a ball will help ingrain the new move into your swing and then it will feel  more comfortable and natural when you actually hit balls.
  3. Finally, try not to stress out about your score for the first few rounds after a lesson,  it may take several weeks before you own the new motion.

Making practice swings instead of hitting balls is a better way to improve your swing technique.

Practice swings can help reinforce sound golf swing fundamentals and mechanics. Making practice swings can also get you into positions that you may not otherwise be able to get into when you swing at a ball full speed.

According to studies, the body will adapt to the specific demands that are placed on it. There is something called the ‘Principle of Specificity’ (reference NASM). The principle states that the body will adapt to the specific demands that are placed on it or the body will get better at what is is repeatedly asked to do.

Making practice swings instead of hitting balls is a better way to improve your swing technique.  If you are trying to learn the swing or make a swing change, rehearsing the move without hitting a ball will assure that you are actually doing the correct move.  Repeating the motion that you want to achieve will help ingrain the move into your real swing.

CardioGolf Shortee Club with Training Videos

The CardioGolf Training Video Series includes drills and exercises to help golfers of all levels improve their swing technique and get a great workout at the same time.  Shape Your Swing, Trim Your Score!

In CardioGolf™ Fitness System, we use the Shortee Training Club to do exercises and swing drills. The club is short for the following reasons:
  • The Shortee Club is easy to swing indoors without hitting the walls or ceilings.
  • Use the Shortee Club to warm up at golf courses that don’t have practice range.
  • Carry the Shortee Club in your suitcase when you travel.
  • The clubhead is closer to your hands, so it is easy to monitor the clubface and learn how to square the face at impact.
  • Since you are not hitting balls with the Shortee Club, there is no judgment of where the ball goes, so you can work on your technique without getting frustrated.
  • The Shortee Club is lighter than a regular club, so you can learn to swing the club faster to develop clubhead speed.
