Fitness to the Fore

KarenGolf Fitness, Misc

I believe your level of fitness determines your golf potential.  The fitter you are the more likely you will be able to take all your joints and muscles through full range of motion for a fluid swing.  The more fit you are, the more endurance you will have to stay strong throughout your round of golf.  The more fit you are, the easier it is to concentrate and focus on your game.

When I was growing up, many believed that golfers were not athletes.  Gary Player was really the only golfer who considered fitness an asset to the game.  It wasn’t until golfers like Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and later Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam on the ladies side appeared on the scene that golfers started to be considered athletes and were following structured fitness programs.

Golf courses are  longer now, requiring 300 plus yard drives and nearly every professional golfer, man or woman, follows some sort of fitness regime so they can bomb their drives.

I think that improved fitness on all the golf tours has also improved professional golfer’s short games as well.  With more coordination, balance and stability it is easier to develop feel and touch around the greens.  With stronger, more flexible cores, professional golfers can spend more time practicing their putting without compromising their backs.

Improving your fitness may also help you ward off disease and sickness. A new study out this week, suggests that moderate to intense exercise may help older people delay aging in the brain.  The study, conducted by the University of Miami and Columbia University  found that following a fitness program is likely to keep your mind sharper and more focused. The study concluded that a person who does more physical work may have the memory and thinking capacity of someone who is 10 years younger.

Doing a specific golf-fitness program can help you concentrate and focus better as well.  Being physically fit helps you be more alert and helps you ward off fatigue to concentrate and focus better and longer while you play.

No one embodies golf-fitness more than the number 1 and number 3 golfers in the world Jason Day and Rory McIlroy.  Check out this video posted by the PGA Tour.  You can’t deny that these two are athletes.
