How a Pair of Socks Could Improve Your Game

KarenGolf Fitness, News

In a round of golf, you may end up walking 6 or 7 miles, and even if you ride in a golf cart, you’ll take 5,000 to 6,000 steps. Not to mention that, during the golf swing, the body acts as a whip, so your power source starts with the feet and legs pushing against the ground. Each foot has to stabilize, pivot and your legs provide movement for the hips to fully rotate and shift weight.

During the golf swing, your feet are the only connection to the ground, so why is it that a golfer’s feet get no respect? There are hundreds of remedies for golfer’s elbow or low back pain but foot pain is hardly ever discussed. Most people just try to limp around the course, ride a cart or and swing through the pain. But by simply  taking a little time to take care of your feet, you could improve your swing and make your golf outing much more enjoyable.

So what can we do to keep from getting foot pain and keep our feet and legs fresh throughout a round of golf?

One way may be to wear compression socks while you play. I was recently introduced to compression socks by John J. Thomas the President and Founder at LEGEND Compression Wear™. I make a living by standing on my feet all day and I have suffered from foot pain and problems all my life, so I am always looking for remedies. I was eager to try the socks and I have been very happy with the relief and support they have given me. I can now focus on my students, rather than on achy and sore feet.

Endurance athletes, as well as other professional athletes, have been wearing compression socks or stockings to improve their endurance and stamina for years. Compression socks are said to help flush out lactic acid from the muscles and prevent or delay soreness of the muscles as well as provide a speedier recovery after a competition or training.

According to Thomas, graduated Compression technology from LEGEND Compression Wear™ is designed to improve blood circulation in your legs, stabilize muscles for improved power output, increase your legs’ endurance, and prevent injuries such as calf cramps and shin splints. He says given that golfers spend as much time, if not more time, on their feet than most other athletes, it is surprising that more players do not use compression as part of their daily golf ensemble.

Benefits of Compression Socks for Golfers May Include:

  • Reduced foot pain and leg cramping
  • Prevent or delay muscle fatigue
  • Eliminate and reduces swelling in feet and legs
  • Improve blood circulation
  • Improve muscle and joint support
  • Provide moisture wicking to keep feet dry
  • Provide protection from abrasions
  • Reducing achiness and tiredness is feet and legs

“Even if you don’t wear compression while you play, they also offer a great recovery aspect. After a long round, by slipping on a pair of recovery compression socks, usually offering a slightly higher level of compression, you prevent lactic acid build up and really promote faster healing for your legs, allowing you to tee it up again sooner rather than later,” says Thomas.
