A Note from Karen:

All this week I will focus on tips and drills to help cure your slice. Check out my Cardiogolf Facebook Page for tips and drills.

slice

The slice shot (when the ball curves left to right for a right-handed golfer) in golf is one of the most common swing ailments.   The slice most commonly occurs when the clubface is open relative to the swing path and/or when the swing follows an “out to in” or “over the top” swing path.  All this week, I will post tips and drills to help you cure your slice.

Why we slice-

Many slicers have the tendency to whip the clubface open too quickly on the backswing and then come over the top on the downswing causing an out to in club path and a cut across swing that causes the left to right spin.  If this is your case, try the Belly Button Drill.

Belly drill 2

DON’T DO THIS-If you suck the club inside too quickly on the takeaway as shown in the photo on the left, then you’ll come over the top as in the photo on the right and  you’ll end up slicing on the downswing.Belly drill 1

DO THIS INSTEAD-Belly Button Drill-Keep the butt end of the club pointed to your belly button on the backswing as shown in the photo on the left and point it away from your belly button on the downswing as shown in the photo on the right.

Belly Button Drill-

1. Set up to hit a normal shot.

2. As you take the club back, keep the butt end of the club pointed at your belly button until the clubhead is just outside your right foot (right-handed golfer) as shown in the photo on the left.

3. Swing  to the top of your swing from this position.

4. As you start your downswing, point the butt end of the club away from your belly button as shown in the photo on the right.  This is a bit of an exaggeration, but a slicer needs to practice bringing the clubhead down from the inside not the outside.
