THE HEALTHY GOLFER-Choosing Proper Golf Shoes

KarenGolf Fitness, Misc

I spent a few days to the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando recently and was amazed at all the new items for golf.  Believe it out not, but the hot new technology is actually in golf shoes.  But don’t worry, not all the modern shoes look like nurse shoes or come in bright orange and pink.  Nike actually introduced a shoe that is my favorite called the Lunar Clayton golf shoe, which combines the look of a classic golf shoe with comfort, a supportive fit and a shoe to wear on and off the course.

If you have ever walked 18-holes of golf, you know that it can be exhausting. You may be walking up to 7 miles in a day and if you are carrying your own golf bag, you are putting a tremendous amount of strain on your feet. This can lead to tired, swollen and achy feet and if your shoes do not fit properly this can lead to blisters and bone deformities.

Choosing Proper Golf Shoes

The most important factor in a golf shoe should be the stability it provides your foot. Golf shoe manufactures are now focusing on making shoes that enhance stability and even may help you shift your weight properly. Here are a few suggestions to help you find the perfect golf shoe for your game.

1.    Many foot problems such as flat feet, high arches and bunions are congenital. If you have a foot problem, you should visit a podiatrist or orthopedist who can determine if you need special inserts called orthotics. Orthotics are specially made inserts you place in your shoes to correct foot abnormalaties.

2.  Foot problems can occur from poorly fitted golf shoes. You should wear golf shoes that are wide and long enough, but that do not allow your foot to slide from heel to toe, causing instability in your golf swing.

3.  Make practice swings in the store while you are trying on different shoes to make sure the shoes are comfortable and stable.

4.  Choose shoes that have good support for your feet.  Many new shoes are made with cushiony insoles that act as shock absorbers and have arch supports

5.  Throw away your old golf shoes if they have broken arches, worn down heels or holes.  You will inevitably start to make compensations while you walk or swing that could lead to postural misalignments.

6.  Don’t buy shoes that are too tight expecting them to stretch out while you wear them. Since you will only be wearing your golf shoes once a week or even once a month, they will not stretch to a comfortable size.

7.  Shop for golf shoes in the afternoon, when your feet are swollen. This will boost the likelihood of getting a golf shoe which will feel good throughout an entire golf round.

By buying properly fitted shoes and taking care of your feet can help in preventing long-term foot problems and may even improve your golf game.
