Try This Before You Visit the 19th Hole

It may be relaxing to throw a few drinks back after your round of golf, especially if your back has gotten sore and stiff by the end of the round.  But the temporary relief and relaxation you get from the alcohol may actually be more harmful to you later and make your back condition worse.  According to studies, drinking alcohol dehydrates muscles which can lead to inflammation and more pain.

So before you head to the ’19th Hole’ after your round of golf, try this simple back release exercise instead to realign your muscles and prevent soreness and injury. You may feel better and not need the ‘post round’ cocktail.

In a typical round of golf, you may swing the club up to 300 times including practice swings.  This constant movement puts a tremendous amount of stress on the back.  A ‘post round’ stretch instead of a ‘post round’ cocktail can help you ward off back pain and stiffness, so that you don’t feel the ill-effects of  your round of golf the next day . Not only will you get instant relief from any soreness you have from playing golf, but you will actually be performing preventative maintenance.

Wall Angles

  1. Stand up against a wall with your arms bend at 90 degree angles.
  2. Slowly raise your arms straight up, trying to keep your back to the wall, extending your arms as high as you can.
  3. Hold for a moment and drop arms down to start position.
  4. Repeat for 8 to 10 repetitions.

You can do this without a wall as shown.
