Why Golfers Need Muscles

KarenGolf Fitness, Misc

When most people think about working out to build muscle, they think of those big muscle bound body builders.  Typically, golfers are lean, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have muscle.

Building muscles for golf is important to:

KPJ swing

  • to swing the club easier and with less effort and with more power
  • improve flexibility and balance to create a longer swing arc and be able to create more clubhead speed
  • burn more calories throughout your round of golf and throughout the day to avoid packing on pounds
  • build stronger bones, preventing osteoporosis (especially important for females)
  • improves strength and posture to maintain swing mechanics and avoid swing compensations
  • reduces loss of muscle mass due to inactivity (this is extremely common as we age) that can cause our swings to deteriorate
  • make daily activities easier to perform such as getting in and out of sand traps and bending down to tee up ball
  • improve body composition to look and feel better so you can wear the new form fitting golf clothes

Long, lean muscles work best for golf.  A golf-fitness program should help you condition your muscles, including strengthening and especially stretching to help you elongate your muscles.  When you elongate your muscles, you are able to make longer movements, so your swing arc gets longer and you can create more clubhead speed and power.  With long muscles you increase your range of motion, so you can turn and swing easier with less effort and more power.   Also long muscles help you smooth out your golf swing and prevent those short choppy motion which is usually caused by compensations because of weak and tight muscles.

Also, the longer your muscles, the more efficient your swing becomes and the lower your chances of injury are.
