Walk your golf course, if you can…

KarenGolf Fitness, Misc

Do you want to do an activity that is good for your body, the environment and could save your golf course money?  Then walk while you play golf. Walking is not only an excellent source of exercise, but walking a golf course is a good for the environment and saves wear-and-tear and damage to the grass and sensitive environmental areas on your golf course.

Walk whenever you can

Unfortunately, riding in golf carts has become the status quo for most American golf courses. Very few golf courses allow walking let alone have caddie programs.

But that doesn’t mean you have to go along with the crowd and ride in a cart while you play, it just means that we, the health conscious golfer, needs to convince golf courses to allow us to walk if we want to, by showing them benefits of walking.

First of all, walking is an excellent source of exercise. Walking is one of the most basic forms of exercise.  It is an excellent source of low impact cardiovascular exercise so it is a safe and effective. Walking not only is a way to control weight, but walking can tone muscles and increase lean body mass. Walking can increase stamina; help people manage chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. And if that doesn’t get your attention, walking can boost your mood and make you happier.

Walking can also save golf courses from wear and tear and promote a cleaner environment. Constantly driving a golf cart on fairways and in environmentally sensitive areas can damage the course and cause more maintenance.  Gas guzzling carts emit dangerous toxicants to the environment and waste precious resources. Add too much rain or lack of it to a golf course and a golf cart can create irreversible damage to turf while walking or pulling a golf cart over the grass virtually does no damage to the grasses. Walking a golf course is a good thing to do for your body and for the sake of the course itself – it saves wear-and-tear and damage to sensitive areas, which creates a better environment and can save golf courses millions of dollars a year in maintenance and repair.

But carrying your golf bag while you play may be too taxing for the average golfer and caddies are not always available.  So the best solution is to use a pull cart and many companies have realized that there has been a void in this area.  Many companies have introduced new pull carts to accommodate those golfers that would like to walk while they play.

In the past, pull carts have been very rudimentary and cumbersome. Now-a-days pull carts are as high tech as the clubs they carry.  Pull carts have come a long way-they are lighter, more aerodynamic, sturdy and more compact than the ones you may remember from the local muni-course you played as a kid.

Some pull carts are motorized with remote controls to send them off to the next hole while you putt out. Newer pull carts are easier to pack in your car and can even fit on a golf cart if you are forced to ride.

If you are looking for a way to stay healthy and promote a better environment for your family, not too mention save wear and tear on your golf course consider mentioning some of these facts to your golf pro the next time you play.  Maybe if enough of us get together and promote walking we can convince golf courses to let us walk every once in a while.

This is just my opinion.  What do you think? Send me your questions and comments to KPJ@swingbladegolf.com.

Golf Fitness Workout to Increase Distance and Consistency-Cardiogolf

Cardiogolf is a golf specific workout designed by LPGA Teacher of the Year Karen Palacios-Jansen. Participants learn exercises to promote better swing mechanics, flexibility, strength and balance throughout the golf swing. The routine is a combination of swing drills and golf specific exercises. It accommodates every golfer regardless of gender, age and skill level or fitness level. All you need is a 4 x 4 sq ft space to do the golf swing exercises. If you don’t have a short practice club or enough room to swing a club, you can use a soccer ball or tennis racquet to simulate the golf swing. We will be doing practice swings, but you can do all the exercises without a club as well. I will show you how. We will not actually be hitting balls, but exercises to improve your swing mechanics as well as flexibility and strength.
