Most people abandon their New Year’s Resolutions on January 19, according to studies.

The reason people give up on their fitness goals, I feel, is because they make them way too difficult.  They want to lose 40 pounds, they try to give up alcohol and sugar all together or they vow to exercise for 2 hours everyday.  Then life happens: they can’t sustain their goals so they just end up giving up all together.

The key to staying on track with you fitness and health is to stay consistent-

First, daily practice is the key to success towards any goal.  Making 10 practice swings a day or exercising  for 5 minutes everyday will get you playing better and in better shape than  exercising or practicing for two or three hours at a time, once a week or month.

Second, it is always hard to find big chunks of time to do massive workouts or beat balls on the driving range for hours, so shorter bouts of exercise and practice work better for most people’s schedules.

Thirdly, the long workouts and practice sessions usually lead to fatigued swings, injuries and ingrained bad habits, so cutting the sessions down help prevent injuries.

There is something to be said about the momentum of taking small daily steps towards a goal that is cumulatively better than taking big steps with less frequency.

Don’t give up your fitness goals, just create new habits that are more sustainable.
