Day 10-Side Plank

You know you need to maintain your core strength for better posture and health, but did you know core strength can help your golf swing as well?

Core muscles including abdominals, shoulders and hips need to be strong and mobile so that can maintain proper swing technique as power through rough or a deep divot.  Core strength can also help you improve swing speed for more distance.

Golfdigest.com Fitness Friday quoted a new report saying, “New research published in Sports Health indicates that the side plank or bridge will trigger some of the highest muscle activity in the oblique and deep abdominal muscles when compared to other planking exercises.”

Plank to Side Rotation

1. Begin in a push-up position.  Try to engage your core muscles as you keep your neck, spine and legs in one straight line.  Hold for 10 seconds.

2. Slowly push off your right hand and rotate your body to the side as you reach your right arm to the sky.  Hold for 10 seconds.

3. Return to the start position and repeat of the opposite side.

By pivoting the body around the shoulders, as you do in this exercise, you’ll increase strength and mobility in the shoulders, abdominal muscles, hips and legs.
