10. Tempo Drill

One of the most overlooked fundamentals in golf is tempo or pace of your swing.   Most high-handicappers swing the club back too fast and decelerate on the downswing.  The opposite of what you want to do.  You actually want the speed to increase on the downswing, not decrease.

Try this tempo drill to help you learn how to build up speed in your golf swing.

1. Set up with five or six balls in a row about four to five inches apart (you can put them on a low tee).

2 . Using an 8 or 7-iron, start by hitting the first ball with nice even tempo on the way back and through, finishing in balance.

3. From your finish position, step up to the next ball and swing a little faster, again hitting the ball, and trying to stay in balance.

4. Immediately step up to the next ball and increase the swing pace again and continue hitting the rest of the balls.

5.  The idea is to increase your swing speed with each shot.  Your goal is to hit each shot solid.  It may take you a few tries to get the right tempo for you.
