Chipping Practice

After you have developed a good technique and sense for distance, a good imagination is the third ingredient for a sharp short game.  You will never have the same exact shot in any given round, so you will always have to improvise your technique to match the situation.

In my opinion, you can never practice chipping enough.  Chipping it close can help you save par and avoid those big numbers.  But don’t kill yourself or your back spending hours bent over chipping around the green.  Even a few minutes of practice can help your feel.  I recommend that when you practice, try to chip shots to different distances and targets.  Switch clubs often and be creative.  Grab a friend and have chipping contests.  Take one ball, chip it a hole and then putt the ball out.  See how many times you can get up and down from around the practice green.

You will get confidence around the green by improvising your technique by changing your stance, your ball position, the angle of the clubface and even the swing itself to hit a variety of different shots.

On-Course Exercise-Set aside 10 minutes at the end of your practice session to have some fun attempting adventurous recovery shots.  This will teach to improvise around the green.  Arrange a practice short game session with a friend and add some competition into the session in order to recreate the pressure of a real on-course situation.

Off-Course Exercise-

Get into the habit of stretching everyday.  Here is an example of a golf-specific stretch. Step 1-Set up holding a golf club in your hands with your right palm up and your left palm down like shown in the photo. Step 2-Swing to the top of your swing and hold this position for at least 10 seconds. Step 3-Swing to the finish and hold follow-through position for at least 10 seconds.
