THIS MONTH’S FOCUS IS ON STABILITY AND PUTTING
Stability
The rotational stresses of the golf swing can place a considerable amount of pressure on the spine and muscles. Compound that with the fact that golfers spend 4 to 5 hours in a bent-over stance, repeating the same motion hundreds of times, and it is no wonder that playing golf can cause minor strains in the back, which can lead to severe injuries.
That is why stability is so important for golfers. Core stability allows you to start a chain reaction that leads to power. Stability helps you transfer your energy. Having stability, alongside mobility, allows you to transfer energy from your feet up to your core then to your arms and hands then to the club and finally to the ball. If the core isn’t strong and stable, you will end up breaking the chain reaction leading to using only your arms and hands for a power source.
Stability in your core allows your body to be more rigid or stronger. A stronger, more stable core better maintains the energy within the sequence of the swing.
If your core isn’t strong, then you are not able to transfer energy properly through the body. A stronger core allows for more rotation which will give you more power.
Putting
Although the task of putting may not seem like a highly athletic activity, the long hours of practice, that it takes to be proficient, can take a toll on the body. Especially on the back and hips. Having to hold your spine in position for long periods of time can be very painful for some people, therefore exercises that help improve flexibility and stability while you are practice cannot only help you prevent sore muscles, but also can help you improve your putting technique.
